Aversion
of the serious
A modern collection of prehistoric art curated by Holly Sue McCoy.
My love for dinosaurs and witty humor started at a young age. With all the stress of being a human and trying to survive on this earth, taking my art practice too seriously is not something I want to do. Through making artwork with dinosaurs, I am not only able to create art of something I find beautiful, but I can also supply a comedic relief that I think is needed in our society. The feeling I get when I watch Jurassic Park and the T-rex comes onto the screen for the first time is unmatched. There is thrill, fear, excitement, wonder, and it is an escape into a chaotic world of which I am not truly a part of (I am not the one worrying about getting eaten). Pairing this feeling with comedy by placing dinosaur heads on human bodies, allows the chaos of my own life to fade away. As I create artwork of these marvelous creatures, my modern day problems seem smaller in comparison to being eaten by a 40 ft dinosaur. It is an escape into a world in which I am in charge of the madness.
I asked for submissions of any kind of prehistoric art in order to connect the work I make with other artists around me, as well as gain experience in curation. There were many different approaches taken to this request, and many created the art while in quarantine for COVID-19. I can only hope that through this project, artists who chose to submit found joy and peace while creating their artwork during such a frightening and uncertain time. I hope that they too found an escape of the serious in the process.
Please enjoy the show.

"I wanted to emphasize dichotomies, left/right, pink/blue (which maybe becomes gender dynamics), and dinosaur/human. I wanted to ask the viewer what the relationship between humans and dinosaurs is."
